Shalal Harija is the grandfather of the three orphans Mais, Noor and Rawan whose father was brutally killed because he was married to a shia woman and the mother too was later killed because she was a shi’ite. This incident happened right in front of the children who are left behind with a trauma, and if it was not for the mercy of Allah (swt) and the intervention of the two local doctors, they would have been killed too.

Iraq's widows of war

iraq_widowofwarLFT Donors please continue donating towards this noble project

The invasion of Iraq in March 2003 and the eventual capture and execution of President Saddam left the country in turmoil with wide spread violence against the coalition forces and among various sectarian groups and the strife between many secretariat groups Iraqi groups.

As Iraq emerges from nearly nine years of what majority here think of as an occupation by U.S. forces, and the decades of Saddam's reign before, it faces an uphill battle to help the poor, the wounded, the widowed and others scarred by war.

The Red Cross stated in March 2008 that Iraq's humanitarian situation remained among the most critical in the world with 35% of Iraqi children, or about five million children have been left as orphans.

An estimated 2 million women are primary breadwinners in Iraq.  They all struggle with the realities of their new lives, raising their children alone with no family support and very little or in some case no financial help.

Dear LFT donors:  Please donate generously and help widows to raise their children in these difficult situations.
